PM announces national drive to end rough sleeping by Christmas
Prime Minister Andy Burnham today announced immediate action to provide accommodation for all individuals currently experiencing rough sleeping in the United Kingdom. This initiative, launched on Wednesday 19 August, marks the next phase in his administration's national drive to eradicate rough sleeping by Christmas.
This announcement follows the Prime Minister's first instruction upon taking office, which prioritised tackling homelessness. The new measures are designed to ensure that everyone currently without stable housing receives an offer of safe accommodation as the winter months approach.
The policy specifically targets individuals sleeping rough, a group that includes some migrants who may be experiencing homelessness due to factors such as No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) conditions on their visas, or difficulties accessing housing support upon arrival or after leaving insecure employment.
While the announcement does not explicitly mention migrants, policies addressing rough sleeping have a direct impact on homeless individuals from all backgrounds, including Nigerian and other African immigrants who may find themselves in precarious housing situations. Access to emergency accommodation and support services can be critical for those with limited access to public funds or without established networks in the UK.
